Family Name Nakai Kakejiku

 This custom wallscroll order was made for a customer in Texas. It is written in the full cursive (sousho) style of calligraphy. This is in a three step style scroll format. It has a gold Ichimonji with a Blue with Gold Flower Arabesque Middle Cloth. The Ten/Chi (top/bottom) cloth is a mixed silk, synthetic cloth. It is finished with a resin ivory looking jikusaki and a light gold hanging string. No Excuses Only Victory Kakejiku

 

This Kakejiku is a Hanshi size scroll. In English, the customer asked us to translate No Excuses, Only Victory. In Japanese the characters are 

不言訳　有勝利

「言い訳せずに、勝利あるのみ」Iiwake sezuni Shori arunomi

This is how it reads in Japanese. The customer wanted an orange Wallscroll. So I used the bright Orange and Gold cloud Ichimonji, with a Pure Silk cloth that has a burnt orange background. It is a very elegant scroll. It is finished with Plastic Ivory Jikusaki and a Kodai San Iro hanging string.

This is by Artist Patricia Gustafson. She requested that I use her name in the blog posts. It features a brown and gold ichimonji border, with a green/yellow wicker pattern cloth. It is a donsu fabric (silk). The reason I selected this cloth was the small pattern and green would be a strong complement to the bold red color in the painting. Custom Wall Scroll

 This custom dojo wallscroll is in the Maru Hyougu style. It reads 
心身鍛解放First two characters are shinmi which means mind and body.Third character is Kitaeru which is the verb to forge, train or disciplineLast two characters are Kaihou which means to emancipate or set free.
I also upgraded the jikusaki to a rosewood machined shape. I think it is fancy but not too fancy to overpower the simpler scroll design. It utilizes a bright gold Ichimonji to really make a smooth transition between the gray cloth and the artwork.

A 2011 Scroll Hanging Today

I just met one of the missionaries that served in the Japan Sapporo Mission. It is nice to see my kakejiku or wallscroll hang so well with so much abuse of being written on. This was a hard order to complete, but it is satisfying to see it bring joy to many. I take pride in the wallscrolls and kakejiku I make for customers. Seishin Ryokudo Karate Scrolls

This is a return customer. Originally, he had asked us to translate the phrase "Way of Inner Strength" into Japanese. My wife ultimately came up with this translation. Seishin is spirit or the inner soul and Ryoku is another reading for strength or power. These beautiful scrolls are given as gifts I think. The cloth is a Silk with a very meditative pattern.

It is written in the Gyousho (Semi-cursive) style by Ryugyoku (Yoshimi Yamada Maples). I am very proud of the work she has done for me. Her writing is always consistent and brush strokes are always technically sound, even when there are multiple orders of the same saying or calligraphy.

The scrolls are finished with an ivory plastic jikusaki and usu kincha (gold) hanging string.

The first scroll on the left (if facing away from the scrolls) reads Ryukyu Hon Kenpo, which means the True Kenpo of the Ryukyu islands. The scroll on the right reads Okinawa Shirodzuru Kenpo. This could be translated as Okinawan White Crane Kenpo.

The scrolls are written in the Sousho or full cursive style which provides a very beautiful flowing ideal to the work. I must respect Yoshimi for being able to take one phrase that contains 5 characters and one phrase that contains 6 characters and write them very symmetrically on the same size of paper. I used a red-orange Ichimonji to provide the imagery of a sunset on the backdrop of a green Okinawan island set in the Pacific.

The katana and wakizashi may not be the most authentic accent to put in a display with scrolls conveying an Okinawan theme. A better weapon choice may have been an Eiku, Tonfa or Nunchaku, but we must make do with what we have. I thank Sylvan and Hiromi Pickett for allowing me to borrow these for this display picture.

This is the basic Maru Hyougu style and dimensions in the traditional Bun分 measurement set forth with other dimensions as approximations.
