Aikido Wallscroll with Picture of Osensei

This scroll was shipped to the New York area. It was commissioned by a dojo that wanted both a kakejiku (wallscroll) that also had a picture of Osensei, Morihei Ueshiba. For the Ichimonji, I used a pine needle motif pattern because I read that O Sensei trained by "sometimes hanging from trees with weights on his feet".

It has a dark brown cloth with a large flower karakusa (arabesque) and is completed with a Usukin (light gold) hanging string and black lacquer wood jikusaki with a gold band.

The scroll size is approximately 1 foot wide by 2.5 feet long.

Aikido Scroll to the Northeast

This is an Aikido Scroll that went to the Northeast of the US. You can tell a slight difference in the second character. This is the older form of Ki, which the customer selected. This is also in a 3 step style, or Sandan Hyougu style. The simple framed picture of Osensei, Morihei Ueshiba completes a beautiful display.

If you would like a custom scroll made that frames a picture, print, or canvas painting please contact to Jonathan Maples at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

Aikido Wallscroll or Kakejiku

I have not posted many scrolls recently done for customers because I have been remodeling a house for a move from August until Mid October. Here are some scrolls that I did for some different Aikido practitioners.

This Maru Hyougu scroll provides a great backdrop for the meditation area.

Jikishinkan Aikido Scroll

This was a scroll commissioned by an Aikido group in New York. One of their members did the calligraphy, and it is beautifully brushed. It reads Jikishinkan, which they translate as Direct Mind. They wanted this light blue cloth. They also selected brown glazed ceramic fuuchin to go along with the scroll. It came out beautifully.

The scroll is finished with an ebony jikusaki and the Kodai San Iro hanging string.

Commissioned Aikidou Kakejiku or Wallscroll

This scroll was commissioned for an Aikidou trainer in the Southern US. It says in English, Through the virtue of humble training, understanding of Aiki is acquired naturally.
I had a difficult time obtaining the original Japanese saying, if there is an original quote accorded to Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikidou. So I received help on the translation from two sources, my wife and another gentleman. It reads in Japanese, 謙虚に鍛錬をつめば合気の悟りは自ずと得られる (Kenkyo ni tanren wo tsumeba, aiki no satori wa onozu to erareru.)
Just for informations sake, there were 4 iterations provided by Mr. Akamatsu.  Then my wife took the translations, and melded them into syllabic form that would work for calligraphy and the lines provided. It is written in the Gyousho, semi-cursive style by Ryugyoku Yamada.

The scroll was made by myself, it is a three step style scroll called sandan hyougu. The ichimonji is a a wave pattern with gold and silver. The chuumawashi, intermediate cloth is a burnt orange, with large ivy karakusa (arabesque) pattern. This cloth is a pure silk (Shouken) The Ten/Chi is a dried reed color shike silk. It is completed with a jikusaki that has a red lacquer, and machined edge, and the hanging string is a light green with gold (kinka).

Osensei Morihei Ueshiba Sumi Kakejiku

This is painted by Mariusz Szmerdt of Poland. He has such talent to do either abstract or very detailed painting. I wanted to do justice to the quality of the painting, so in this case I chose a black gold flower Karakusa (arabesque) that is a  Pure silk for the Chumawashi (intermediate cloth). I chose a gold on gold with a small flower karakusa for the border to contrast with the black cloth, and for the Ten/Chi, I used a benberugu, shike cloth that is khaki/tan. It is completed with a Ceramic jikusaki that has a dark brown that creates a color symmetry with the black cloth. It is finished with a Gold (Kincha) hanging string.

Custom Scroll for Aikido Dojo

This scroll was made for a customer who is enrolled in our scroll referral program. This is a program which allows one to earn a commission on referral sales for scrolls. This Aikidou dojo, located in the Western United States, wanted to provide a retirement gift for one of their Sensei’s.   he had a scroll commissioned.
This Sensei’s nickname was Kissaki, which means point of the sword, which is written prominently on the right hand side. On the left hand side is written, “To renew our Aikidou fighting spirit.” And the translation only uses Characters. The customer was concerned about my use of Fighting spirit, in that Aikidou has a principle to only use the martial art in self-defense. But my use of Toukon was to imply not to give up in the face of adversity or trial, in other words, to fight through the difficult battles of our life, and not meant to go out and start fights.
The calligraphy was written by Ryugyoku, Yoshimi Yamada Maples in the Semi-cursive style called gyousho. The scroll is made with a benberugu cloth which has both silk and cotton. It has a flower karakusa arabesque. The Ichimonji is a gold on orange with a cloud pattern. The Jikusaki is wood, and is a Shitan stain. The hanging string is usukin, or light gold.

This customer ordered with a tight deadline and I was really worried whether it would be ready or not...but the scroll was just shipped this afternoon. This is a long thin scroll, with the Name of the Dojo in Gyousho or Semi-cursive style Japanese Calligraphy. I think the cloth is beautiful, and that is why I took a closeup of the cloth. It is styled with a deep gold on gold karakusa Ichimonji that transitions well into the green kireji. It is completed with a black lacquer wood jikusaki and a Takuboku design kake/makihimo.
