Torn Tachi Scroll Repair

Customer asked for a miracle. The photo to the left is a picture of the scroll as I received it from the customer. I was very worried if I could take the scroll apart and remount it with minimal scarring or made to be seen that it was repaired. Customer chose some cloths that are not traditional, but I like the way the scroll turned out. If you look close you can see where the scroll was repaired. If you have a damaged or worn kakejiku, I would love to give you a quote for remounting. Remounting a Wallscroll

Sometimes customers send me damaged scrolls to Remount. This is one of them. The cloth on the bottom dowel of the scroll called jikubou ahd began to tear. There were also some areas where the fabirc had won away. So I disassembled the scroll taking all the individual pieces apart, and then I started to remount the work on new paper. This layer of paper is called Hada Urauchi.

Kakejiku Remount Part 2

In the previous post, we showed pictures of the painting with the Ichimonji and Hashira intact. The second photo was of the painting after the Sou & Hadaurauchi were removed. (These are additional layers of backing paper). This photo is of the painting with a new Hadaurauchi applied. It helps remove the wrinkles, and repairs the tear, and helps to minimize the yogore or stains on the left hand side of the painting. I got the cloth in from Japan last week, but want to give this one a little time on the drying board.

Old Kakejiku or wallscroll Remount Work

Besides orders for new scrolls I am working on an order for a remount. This painting is on paper, and there was no Ten and Chi. Also there were small sections with yogore and one slight tear. Last night I spent a good while carefully removing the Sou and Hada Urauchi. The Hada urauchi is the first paper used to back the painting and cloth. The Sou urauchi is the layer of paper used to seal all the assembled pieces together. I will keep everyone apprised of some of the steps to the finish.

Silk Sumie Remount Scroll

This has been one of the worst weeks I have had working on Kakejiku. Fortunately, the best came at the end of the week. I had a customer send me this scroll to be remounted. There was Yogore, staining on the Ten of the cloth and the Jikubou, was almost completely ripped from the Jikubukuro.

We consulted and he asked me what cloth I would select to put into the scroll. I selected the cloud motif because there were no clouds in the painting that would be redundant, and the slate/grey color helped to bring out the skillfully drawn dark and light contrasts in the picture. I also retained the basic Fukuro Hyougu styling. Also, the most interesting thing about this scroll was the Jikusaki, which seemed to have a purple lacquer which I have never seen before.

I retained and used the original Hassou and Jikubou, so I had to be very careful to maintain consistent measurements. I took extra time in working on the mimiori of this scroll. I hope you enjoy seeing this scroll, because it is going back to the customer's house.
