Dojo Kakejiku 掛け軸

Iaidou Wallscroll number 2

This one is made with a shiha cloth that has a small karakusa. The smaller karakusa makes it easier to match patterns and designs when assembling. It has a gold tint, and is very beautiful. The writing is Iaido in Gyousho by Yoshimi Yamada Maples, (Ryugyoku) It is completed with an usukin (light gold) hanging string. The Ichimonji is a kinran cloth with a large karakusa pattern.

New Aikido Kakejiku

The top portion contains an Enso, and the bottom vertical writing says Nihon Goshin Aikidou. It is written in the semi-cursive, gyousho, japanese calligraphy style by Yoshimi "Ryugyoku" Maples. The customer requested a Fukuro Hyougu style scroll with a black cloth and red suji. It has an Ebony Enshu wood jikusaki (Kokutan Enshu) and light gold (usukin) hanging string.

Iaido Scroll-Hayashizaka Iai Dai Myo Jin

This beautiful scroll is for an Iaido practitioner in the Western US.

I am so honored to be given this artwork to make into a scroll. The Calligraphy was given to this Martial Artist as a gift for the extensive research and direct lineage to this sword school in Japan, Muso Jikiken Eishin Ryu. This Iaido style traces its lineage back 22 generations to the founder Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu.


It is written in the Kaisho style, and reads Hayashizaki Iai Dai Myo Jin. The owner of the artwork confirmed to me that it would translate The Great Patron Deity of Iaido. Similar to Tenshin Katoryu it is said that this sword style was presented to Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu after praying for 100 days before the deity of the shrine, Kuma no Meijin.

The simple Maru Hyougu style of design with the brown silk and honeycomb pattern interlaced with flowers really seems to present the writing in an excellent light, and support the heavenly inspiration of the sword style bestowal by Kuma no Meijin. The scroll is accented with an Ebony Wood Jikusaki and gold with white arrow pattern kakehimo. The Ichimonji selected was a light brown to help transition the view between the artwork and the cloth. I was very pleased with the end result of the scroll and hope this will bless the new dojo in the future. Dimensions as follows:

Kosho Shourei Kai Karate Dojo Scrolls

These scrolls were commissioned by a California Dojo, who wished to have traditional scrolls that depicted both their affiliation with the Sei Kosho Shourei Kai which is at http://www.skski.net/ and their following of the Style of Koshoryu Kenpo.

It is based upon the teachings of Buddhism. James Mitose is credited as the man who originally brought Japanese Kenpō to Hawaii in 1936. Kosho Shorei Ryu Kempō is the martial art within the parent art Kosho Shorei Ryu, which originated in Kyushu, Japan in 1235 and was taught only to family members and monks staying at the Kosho-ji Temple.[2] As an art of Sohei Warrior Monks, this art is primarily one of spiritual development and holistic self-cultivation, and secondarily one of self-defense. There is no offensive martial aspect of this art traditionally. It is only used to protect life.

Kosho Shorei Ryu 古松奨勵流 means "Old Pine Tree School of Encouragement to Spiritual Diligence." According to Mitose's teachings the art is defined by the practice of oldpinetree.com: eight arts. These arts are:

Working on these scrolls was very fun. The size of the scrolls being uniform will allow them to complement the dojo in a side by side manner. The spiritual nature of making a scroll is reflected in this form of Martial Art.
