Group of Scrolls Part 1

These are two different Sandan Hyougu scrolls I did for a customer in Wisconsin. He brushed all the works and sent them to me. In total there were 11 scrolls, and it was a stretch to get them all done on time. But I really enjoyed the opportunity to create some of my own cloth combinations for these.

Nick Rimando Wall of the Wasatch Sumie

I commissioned this painting as a fan of Nick Rimando, goalkeeper for the soccer team Real Salt Lake I am a big fan of RSL and try to watch every match. Nick Rimando has been such a solid player for so many years. I was sad to hear this would be his last year, so as soon as I heard this I commissioned two paintings from Polish artist Mariusz Szmerdt. I wanted to frame these together in a unique style.

I asked my supplier in Japan to specifically match the Claret, of the team colors. The blue (chuumawashi) cloth closest matched the cobalt. In the borders called Ichimonji, I used a mountain motif in order to express Rimando's moniker, "The Wall of the Wasatch".

The paintings are of his signature clap to the fans, and the other is of him holding the MLS Cup trophy, to celebrate the teams championship won in 2009. I have received such enjoyment from watching him play, and I hope this reminds people of these pleasurable moments.

Scroll Making Class Student 2

Fortunately, this was a smaller scroll than the other student made. It was a little easier to handle.
They chose the koi pattern cloth with a nice green cloth. The jikusaki are ceramic light green and the Uguisu color hanging string was used. Simple but elegant.

Scroll Making Class Student 1

This student brought an original Japanese painting that he had purchased earlier. It is a common Japanese theme with two cranes. I think it turned out nicely. He chose the Takuboku hanging string and a machined rosewood jikusaki. Scroll of Painting by Tanomura Chikuden

This is a scroll done of a print of Chikuden's original artwork. It is a landscape with a scholar. You can learn more about Chikuden in the wikipedia link below. The soft nature of the scroll really gives me a calm, relaxed feeling.
This was part of the Sanso collection, and I have  just a few more scrolls to make for these prints. I will be very sad when this project is over, because all the artworks are very fun to look at. I will not miss the larger pieces though...

This scroll is done with a tan cloth with a very opaque pattern. It has a rust color Ichimonji, and wood jikusaki.

If you would like a scroll made of your artwork, photo, calligraphy or other medium, please contact me at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com
