Kakejiku for Girls

 This kakejiku was another order from the Nihon Matsuri in Salt Lake. This was for a girls room with the character Suki (to Like). She selected a cotton cloth with girls in kimono playing, that I purchased from Numaya in Japan. It is paired with a Green Ichimonji, Ivory Plastic Jikusaki and a gold hanging string. Dee Teller #9 Sing (Spirit Woman)

This is the ninth painting of Dee Teller's exhibition titled Asia Speaks. http://www.paradisecenterforthearts.org/gallery/exhibitions/

It is titled Sing (Spirit Woman). I felt this needed a more neutral cloth, so I selected a flower pattern with a light brown. I used a gold on gold Ichimonji to keep the focus on the painting. The Jikusaki are bamboo. This is a large scroll.

Spirit Woman Shodo Kakejiku Dee Teller Number 5

This is the fifth scroll in a series by Dee Teller. Her writing and work is very fluid and beautiful. This is titled Spirit Woman, and the second character is definitely easy to read as woman or onna in Japanese 女. The first character is in a Full cursive, and I need to confirm with the artist what the characters are.

For this scroll, I thought it would be best to use the most informal scroll style and mounted the art in a Fukuro Hyougu style. The slightly off white silk with the peach colored paper provides an inconspicuous backdrop for the scroll. I used black suji that are 0.5 bun, to border the Top (Ten) and Bottom (Chi) sections of the scroll. It is finalized with a resin jikusaki that really mirrors a true ivory, without having to kill any elephants...

Scroll Dimensions are as follows:

Name in Kanji Name in English Size in Bun Size in Inches
Ten 69 8.23
Suji 0.5 0.06
Partition Bottom 45 5.37
紙本の幅さ Artwork Width 76 9.07

Pillars 20 2.39
Chi First Partition 24 2.86
Suji 1 0.12
Middle Partition 15 1.79
Bottom Partition 40 4.77
掛け軸の幅さ Scroll Width 116 13.84
掛け軸の長さ Scroll Length 406.5 48.49

Jiko Ryu Karate Wallscroll

This custom scroll will be going to the United Kingdom. It turned out very nicely. I especially love the deep gold on gold Ichimonji of this scroll. It provides a mellow, yet distinct and royal contrast. It has a beautiful and simple navy silk cloth with plastic ivory jikusaki and a Gold Brown Hanging String.  The writing is in a Kaisho style written by Yoshimi Maples. Tenbatsu-Divine Punishment Scroll

This scroll was ordered directly from my online shop at http://www.shop.customjapanesecalligraphy.com/ It is headed somewhere in the deep Southeast of the US.

If you would like to order a custom scroll there are three ways to get started: 1. Go to my shopping site at www.shop.customjapanesecalligraphy.com 2. Download my scroll design workbook from my website at www.customjapanesecalligraphy.com to read about the concepts behind kakejiku or wallscroll design. 3. E-mail to me directly at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

The most interesting fact on this scroll is that my wife sure saved me a lot of headache. When the customer asked for Divine Punishment, I had no idea that there was a Japanese phrase for this. I did nail the second character batsu, but if it had been left to me to do the translation it would have been Shinbatsu...Like God, or the same character of Kami in Kamikaze...

Fortunately, I have a wonderful wife to help me get the Japanese correct. This scroll is written in the Kaisho, block print style. It is a beautifully written work and I am proud at how this scroll turned out. The darker antique cloth is complemented with a large gold on white ichimonji. The customer chose the black hanging string which is quite beautiful as well.

Scroll dimension given in the bun measurement.
Ten = 82
Ueichimonji = 13
Shihon no Habasa = 76
Shihon no Nagasa = 105
Hashira = 23
Shitaichimonji = 9
Chi = 58
Total Scroll Width = 122 (14.55 Inches)
Total Scroll Length = 267 (31.85 Inches)
