MuGa 無我 (No Self) Kakejiku

 

This Japanese calligraphy was provided by a Buddhist practitioner. Muga means Egoless or no self in English. The deeper meaning would need to be explained by the Roshi themself, as I am not very versed in Buddhist teachings. Because it is a religious piece of work, I recommended that we mount it in the Butsu Hyougu style. It has an ichimonji with a cloud motif, with a small brown suji bordering that and the artwork. It is then surround by a small gold karakusa kinran cloth. Again bordered by the brown suji, and finally the outer cloth. I think it turned out beautifully, and hopes it aids the practitioners in their meditation and other rituals. Enso

This scroll was commissioned by a customer from the Salida Art Festival. It has a beautiful white on gold Ichimonji to provide a powerful transition for the black cloth. The jikusaki has a specialty gold pattern which matchs nicely to the overall feel of the scroll.

(円相) is a Japanese word meaning "circle" and a concept strongly associated with Zen. Ensō is one of the most common subjects of Japanese calligraphy even though it is a symbol and not a character. It symbolizes enlightenment, strength, elegance, the Universe, and the void; it can also symbolize the Japanese aesthetic itself. As an "expression of the moment" it is often considered a form of minimalist expressionist art.
