Bonsai Tapestry Frame

This tapestry frame was made for a bonsai practitioner that wanted a scroll that he could paint his own items in order to use for bonsai displays. The middle blue cloth has a white flower karakusa and is a benberugu (mixed silk) cloth. The top and bottom cloth is a taupe shike cloth. It turned out very nice. Sanso #65 Flowering Plum Tree in Moonlight

This is a print of the original that was painted by Tani Buncho, a Japanese literati (bunjin) artist. (谷 文晁, October 15, 1763 – January 6, 1841)

This was the most difficult scroll to make in the group because of the size of the painting. The resulting scroll took up an entire section on a 4'x8' drying board when making. Needless to say I spent a lot of time on my knees for this one.

I love the beautiful layering and depths of the different shades of sumi on this painting. It is very rich and complex. The simple scroll design with a brown cloth containing a very demure karakusa helps to bring out the beauty of this painting.

If you would like a scroll made for a gift, martial arts dojo, ikebana/bonsai display, or other occasion please email to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

Kakejiku for Bonsai Artist

This painting on silk was sent to me by a bonsai artist in the midwest. It is a beautiful painting with pines and cranes. It is a very traditional Japanese motif. The brown pattern in the pure silk reminds me of a strong breeze. I hope to have a picture of it displayed with the bonsai.

Smaller Cloudy Moon Scroll

This is another painting by Mariusz Szmerdt of Poland. He was working on a cloudy moon for another customer, and this was an iteration to make sure it worked properly.

The full moon is often times an Autumn symbol in Japanese culture. Rather than design this neutrally with the cloths, I decided to make this specific for the season. I styled it in a Nidan Hyougu style, which is a little more formal than the Maru Hyougu style, but a little less formal than the Sandan or Yamato Hyougu style. I think this scroll would work best for a Juniper in a Moyou style. I would not pair a deciduous tree for a fall display, because the cloth already has reds and yellows in it. The red/yellow chuumawashi cloth is a pure silk (Shoken). The Ten/Chi light brown cloth is also a (shike) silk. The scroll is finished with ebony jikusaki that are 8 bun in diameter, and the hanging string is the Kodai San Iro.

Rooster Kakejiku for Bonsai Enthusiast

This scroll was ordered during my scrollmaking class at the American Bonsai Society convention in September of 2013. It took a little longer to complete than normal, but the cloth selected was just gorgeous.
Painting was completed by Mariusz Szmerdt, and it is done in the Maru Hyougu style. It has a benberugu cloth, with a Kinran Ichimonji, plastic ivory jikusaki and a Green Hanging String. This is a seasonal bird and would go very well with a bonsai in a specific season which I will disclose if you e-mail to me at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com.

Another Bird Scroll for ABS

This is another scroll done for the convention at the American Bonsai Society. It was painted by the
artist Natsuko Horinouchi. She really followed the example for this one quite well. It is a Shrike in monochrome, perched on a dried twig. It is a very beautiful example of a fall season scroll for display with a bonsai, ikebana or sanyasou.

The scroll is done in a three step style called Sandan Hyougu. The hashira or pillars surrounding the vertical sides of the artwork are very narrow, only 5 Bun wide. So this scroll could be considered a Rinpou Hyougu style as well.

The Goldenrod on the top and bottom are a shike cloth and the chuumawashi is a green/gold with a smaller leaf karakusa (arabesque). The Ichimonji is a kinran with a large gold flower pattern on a light tan color background. The scroll is completed with a Kincha (Brown) hanging string and a wooden jikusaki that was salvaged off of an old scroll. This gives it a more rustic feel.

Scroll dimensions as follows:
Name in Kanji Name in English Size in Bun Size in Inches
天 Ten 126 15.03
上中廻し Ue Chuumawashi 30 3.58
上一文字 Ue Ichimonji 11 1.31

Scroll One in Japan Completed

This is the first of three scrolls completed in Japan. I learned many new techniques, such as the use of Fukushima Silk, Naka Urauchi and attaching and completing Fuutai for scrolls. This scroll or kakejiku is specifically made for the ABS 2013 convention, but if you would like to purchase before email to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

This is a picture of Oriental Ducks, painted by Natsuko Horinouchi of Germany. I think it is very nicely done. I used the white chuumawashi pattern to reinforce rippling water and the Ichimonji and Ten/Chi to be shades of pond water as well. It is completed with a silver Kakehimo, and Ceramic Jikusaki that are also light blue and blend well with the Chi portion of the scroll.

Dimensions as follows:
Name in Kanji Name in English Size in Bun Size in Inches
天 Ten 95 11.33
上中廻し Ue Chuumawashi 30 3.58
上一文字 Ue Ichimonji 12 1.43
