First Name Translation into Japanese Kakejiku

Here is a new scroll commissioned for a friend of a school acquaintance's new baby girl. The girls name is Luella, and in Japanese would Read Ruera. So I went to my dictionary to find some terms that would work with that name and be feminine as well. The first character is Ru 屡, Which can be often or Again and Again. This character is also read as Shibashiba. The Second character is 偉 Era(i), which means Excellent or Admirable. So it would roughly mean someone who is admirable again and again.

It was written by Yoshimi Yamada Maples in the Kaisho style and I completed the scroll with a light purple mixed silk with a small pattern in it. The ichimonji is a gold on gold small karakusa and the hanging string is a light gold. It is completed with ivory plastic jikusaki.

This size scroll is relatively inexpensive and if you would like a quote for a similar price contact to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com. Dimensions of the scroll as follows:

Custom Shikishi

This custom shikishi was written by Yoshimi Maples or Ryugyoku, and is written in the Sousho, full cursive, style. The order request was for a first name translation into Japanese. Aaron Aziel. I used the original meaning of the name Aaron which is mountain of strength. I did put strong first to put the adjective in front of the Mountain. It reads Kyouzan or Kyousan Oni 強山鬼.

If you would like a custom shikishi ordered email to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

First Name Translation Kakejiku

This scroll was made for a bonsai artist. She wanted to do a painting, but decided it was too difficult to choose what she wanted for her tree. She decided to do a translation of her first name into Japanese. This is written in Gyousho or Semi-cursive style for the name Phyllis.
夫 ふ Fu Mrs. Or Husband Wife
里 り Ri Hometown Village, or One’s Parents Home
主 すSu Lord
Mrs. Lord/Master of one’s Hometown, is how I interpreted it. Yoshimi is in Japan at the moment, so I have not confirmed if this would be her interpretation of the characters. The scroll is done with a beautiful gold on cream large Karakusa (arabesque) ichimonji and a cloth that is grey/periwinkle with a purple pattern running throughout.
Dimensions:

Name in Kanji Name in English Size in Bun Size in Inches
天 Ten 117 13.96

Martial Art Scroll for First Name

This scroll was made for a Martial Artist from the State of Washington. This dojo has always been very supportive of my work and has ordered several scrolls. It makes me feel good when I receive multiple orders from the same customer, as it is confirmation that the customer is pleased with the end product.

If you would like to order a custom scroll there are three ways to get started: 1. Go to my shopping site at www.shop.customjapanesecalligraphy.com 2. Download my scroll design workbook from my website at www.customjapanesecalligraphy.com to read about the concepts behind kakejiku or wallscroll design. 3. E-mail to me directly at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

This is the translation of the first name Shaylee. In Hiragana we translated it to the phonetic spelling of しえり Shi e ri. 士 is the same character as that written in Bushido or warrior, it has the meaning of acolyte. 恵 is the character that can read e, but is often Megumi and means to be blessed. 里 is the character for Ri or Sato and is your parents hometown village. The translation we gave is the Warrior of the Blessed hometown. Both characters Megumi and Ri are commonly used in Japanese girl’s names.

The customer chose the beautiful purple rose cloth, which is now sold out. They requested a beautiful gold ichimonji for the border. To provide a strong accent, a much wider 14 bun top and 9 bun bottom was selected for the size. This is written in the Kaisho, block print style by Ryugyoku.

Scroll dimensions in bun followed by inches in parantheses:

Ten 天: 122 (14.57)

Ue Ichimonji 上一文字: 14 (1.67)

Shihon Yoko 紙本横: 78 (9.30)

Shita Ichimonji下一文字 : 9 (1.07)

Martha First Name Translation in Sousho or Grass Style Writing

This scroll was a commissioned scroll and is already sold. To work on designing your own scroll, contact Jonathan Maples at sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com.

This is for the name Martha. It was translated phoenetically as Maasa or マアサ in Hiragana. Because it is a foreign word, it would be more appropriate to list it as マーサ in katakana. It was decided to use the characters 真 which is in the word truth, reality or genuineness. The second character used was 晨 which is a character indicating activity and vibrancy.

The tan color of the scroll is complemented with a black kakehimo and black wooden lacquered jikusaki which give the scroll an extra look of elegance in its design.
