Muso Calligraphy Kakejiku

This customer wanted a scroll that read Muso, after the Buddhist monk Muso Soseki who lived from 1275-1351. He was a calligrapher, teacher, poet and garden designer. This is written in the Gyousho semi-cursive style by Ryugyoku (Yoshimi Yamada Maples). The scroll was made in a Sandan style format. The ichimonji is a dark brown with a pattern that was not a flower or ivy on purpose. The tan intermediate cloth or Chumawashi is a donsu with a maple leaf pattern. The top blue cloth has a nomi pattern. It is finished with a natural stain jikusaki. Kakejiku Hanging in Italy

I am blessed to see my artwork in many countries. This plum blossom sumie is in Italy. Painted by the artist Daniela Caseli. This is what she said, "Hello Jonathan, hope you are fine. I have good news. Fortunately yesterday I got my parcel. This is a picture of your awesome work, you are a nice artist. See you soon. Many Thanks Indeed. Best wishes Daniela." These kind words make me feel so good! And likewise you are a master painter, Daniela!

DeAngelis Last Name Kakejiku

This was an order from the Salt Lake Nihon Matsuri. It took about a month and 1 week to finish the scroll. The customer wanted the scroll that had their last name DeAngelis as an anniversary gift. This is the last of this Crane cloth that I have. The crane is a symbol of a good, long lasting marriage in Japanese culture. Very appropriate. The calligraphy was done by my wife Yoshimi "Ryugyoku" Maples. It is finished with ivory plastic jikusaki and the Kodai Saniro Hanging string. If you have questions about having a custom scroll made, please contact sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com or phone/text 801-214-4064.

Flowering Tree Sumie Kakejiku

This is a small painting of a Sumie by Daniela Caselli. It looks like plum blossoms to me, but I am unsure. I framed this in a Rinpou Hyougu style, and selected some light green in the Ichimonji cloth and blue, pure silk chuumawashi in order to accentuate a cool feeling to the painting as early spring is typically the time when the plum flowers. The narrow Hashira help to accentuate the painting, and a light khaki mixed silk solid was used for the Ten/Chi.

If you would like a painting or calligraphy mounted please contact sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com or call or text to 801-214-4064.

Torn Tachi Scroll Repair

Customer asked for a miracle. The photo to the left is a picture of the scroll as I received it from the customer. I was very worried if I could take the scroll apart and remount it with minimal scarring or made to be seen that it was repaired. Customer chose some cloths that are not traditional, but I like the way the scroll turned out. If you look close you can see where the scroll was repaired. If you have a damaged or worn kakejiku, I would love to give you a quote for remounting. MuGa 無我 (No Self) Kakejiku

This Japanese calligraphy was provided by a Buddhist practitioner. Muga means Egoless or no self in English. The deeper meaning would need to be explained by the Roshi themself, as I am not very versed in Buddhist teachings. Because it is a religious piece of work, I recommended that we mount it in the Butsu Hyougu style. It has an ichimonji with a cloud motif, with a small brown suji bordering that and the artwork. It is then surround by a small gold karakusa kinran cloth. Again bordered by the brown suji, and finally the outer cloth. I think it turned out beautifully, and hopes it aids the practitioners in their meditation and other rituals. If you would like a painting or calligraphy mounted please contact to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com

Two Dragon Kakejiku or WallScrolls

These are a pair of Dragon scrolls painted by Vinh Bui. Very dynamic and beautiful pieces with strong color. Currently they are in a Sandan Hyougu format, but may be putting fuutai on the scrolls if the customer wants them applied. The Ten and Chi is a Mixed Silk Earth Brown. The Chumawahsi cloth is a green/yellow with a slight wave pattern. The Ichimonji is a deep gold with a very faint flower arabesque. I wanted to use very inconspicuous cloths so the paintings would be highlighted. It is finished with a Deep Gold Kakehimo, and a metallic two tone ceramic jikusaki to help complement the background of the paintings.

If you would like to order a custom scroll please email to sales@customjapanesecalligraphy.com or call or text 801-214-4064.

Strong (Tsuyoi) Kakejiku

This is a wallscroll I made for a church youth group, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City. The theme for the youth this year is in the New Testament Phillipians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. So the leaders asked my wife to write the character for Strong. I then asked the leader which cloth they wanted to utilize for the scroll and they selected this blue donsu that has a nomi pattern. To complement the strong theme, in the church there is a hymn called "For the Strength of the Hills" That is the reason I used a mountain or hill pattern gold Ichimonji cloth. The scroll is finished with a lacquere jikusaki and the takuboku hanging string. Some other scriptures for the kakejiku related to strength, hills and reliance on Christ are the following:

Hymn: There is a Green Hill Far Away

Old Testament: Psalm 24:3

New Testament: Matthew 5:4

Doctrine and Covenants: 49:5
